How to patch a small hole.

For the last 5 years we’ve lived in an apartment and whenever we eventually move out I want to make sure we get our deposit back. We recently took down the baby gate because my smarty pants 2 year old figured out how to open it. It was the type of gate that you have to screw to the wall and push down and pull up at the same time to open. (Incase you’re curious about the gate here is the link Amazon.com) When we removed the gate it left noticeable holes in the door frame. Like I said earlier, I’m determined for us to get the deposit back. So today I’m going to show you how to patch a small hole.  IMG_9867

Here’s what you’ll need:

Putty Knife

Fine Sandpaper

Spackling

Paint

Paint Brush

First you’ll want to sand the imperfection down until, it’s even with the wood/wall.

Next you’ll take your putty knife and gather some spackling on it. Apply the spackling over the hole and allow it to dry.  (I use Dap DryDex spackling because it goes on pink and turns white when it’s dry. This keeps me from checking it constantly and becoming impatient.)

Whenever the spackling turns white sand it down until it’s even with the wall/wood. When that’s finished you’ll want to wipe around the area to make sure there isn’t any dust that could get into your paint.

Once the area is clean paint over the spot that you repaired with paint and let it dry. There you have it!

*I originally went to home depot and bought a sample of egg shell white to use. However, it wasn’t an exact match. This lead me ask the paint crew for my apartment complex what the brand/color was. Guess what? Not only did they tell me what the exact color was and where I could get it but they also gave me some paint. How awesome is that?! Your paint crew may  do the same, so don’t be afraid to ask! Especially, if you want your deposit back.
